As a general rule, Local environmental health experts note that raw well water in Florida is rarely potable without a treatment system. Unfiltered SWFL well water is highly susceptible to iron staining, sulfur odors, hard minerals, and potential runoff contaminants like fertilizers or bacteria

While city water meets minimum federal safety standards, municipalities do not soften your water or remove heavy minerals. Many SWFL residents on city water choose to add a water softener to protect their plumbing, plus a Reverse Osmosis (RO) system to remove heavy chlorine and chemical byproducts from their drinking water.

The notorious "rotten egg" odor common in rural areas like DeSoto County and inland Charlotte County is caused by naturally occurring hydrogen sulfide gas trapped in the underground aquifer. While it isn't dangerous to drink, the smell can make showering or cooking unbearable.

If your well water leaves ugly orange or black stains in your sinks, toilets, or outdoor walls, you have high concentrations of dissolved iron and manganese. Standard water softeners can handle trace amounts of iron, but heavy staining requires a dedicated iron backwash filter. 

Heavy summer rainstorms and hurricanes can cause local water tables to rise rapidly, flooding well heads with surface runoff that may contain agricultural fertilizers, pesticides, or coliform bacteria. If your area experiences severe flooding, we highly recommend scheduling a water test.
